L Swine Flu

What to do if you think you have swine flu

  1. DO NOT go to Hospital Accident and Emergency unless you are seriously ill. DO NOT attend the Surgery unless invited to do so.

  2. Check your symptoms by telephoning the National Flu Information Line on 0800 1 513 513 or login to NHS Choices.
  1. Telephone the Surgery on 01845 577297 if:

Further information about swine flu can also be found from Directgov or Fergus Walsh's blog on the BBC.

What to do if you are given authorisation for antiviral treatment

If you are diagnosed with swine flu you will be given an authorisation number that a "Flu Friend" – a friend or relative who does not have swine flu – can use to pick up antivirals from a local antiviral collection point.

  1. Identify your "Flu Friend" who will be able to obtain any medicine that is prescribed for you.

  2. Tell your Flu Friend where to go to pick up the antivirals and that he/she will be required to show ID for both you, the patient, and your Friend.

Swine flu vaccination

So far vaccination has been rolled out to patients who are particularly at risk including those with underlying chronic illness, pregnant or aged undr 5 years.  If you are in one of these categories and missed the vaccination when it was offered, please contact the Surgery to see if it is still available.

The Government's original intention was to roll out the vaccine to everyone in stages but it is now unclear whether this will happen as the swine flu outbreak is abating.  A significant resurgence of the disease could still occur however.

What to do if there is a significant outbreak in North Yorkshire

Keep a regular check on this website. If an outbreak (that is, a significant number of cases) is declared in North Yorkshire then arrangements for visiting Topcliffe Surgery for consultations or to collect medicines from the Dispensary will change. In such an event information will be posted on this website and in the local press.

Basically, in the event of an outbreak, all routine Surgery work, such as diabetic checks and cervical smears will be suspended, except at the discretion of the doctors. Walk-in, no-appointment-needed, surgeries will also be suspended. All patients will be seen by appointment only. There will be no access to the Surgery except by appointment or with permission of the receptionists. Patients with suspected swine flu will be seen at a different time from those requiring routine consultations. The Dispensary opening hours will also change to be in line with the times reserved for patients without symptoms of swine flu. Telephone the Surgery, log into the website or see the local press for details in the event of a local outbreak.
