Bowel cancer campaign to launch soon:

This is a national campaign to raise awareness of bowel cancer and the importance of detecting it early. Please see your GP if you are concerned.

The 'patient reference' or 'patient participation' group is a new concept that many surgeries in the country are now embracing by having a group that is 'run by the patients' and 'led by the patients.' It is meant to be a way for patients to express their thoughts about how their surgery is run and how they feel it can be improved in areas such as telephone access and appointment availability for example. But also to consider their surgery amongst other surgeries at large, for example how GP commissioning is going to affect them and what services the patients feel they need in their locality. It is an excellent way for GPs to understand and appreciate their patient's thoughts and needs and adapt their daily practice and premises where appropriate and achievable.

Topcliffe has already formed a small group and we have met twice to discuss the surgery and construct a questionnaire to be distributed to our patients this year, to ask about general attitudes of staff and quality and cleanliness of the practice etc. And in addition to this, to ask about our chosen topic which is the telephone service. You will therefore see some more focused questions about our phone service e.g. 'how often are we engaged?'  How would you feel about a call holding facility...? etc. By simply 'taking the questionnaire' on the home page you can offer your opinion on the phones in under a minute.

Next year we will choose a different topic to focus on and improve, rather than trying to address everything at once!

The key thing about our group is, that is as much yours, as it is ours. We may in future expand our group to on line chat rooms and bigger meetings, but whilst we are learning through the process, do not hesitate to contribute any ideas or thoughts you may have about your surgery at Topcliffe. Remember you can also sign up for our virtual patient group and actively participate via the website/e mail. Please see right margin on home page.

Kind thanks

The Topcliffe Team
